Water savings at Barbeque Nation in Lawrence Road Industrial Area, New Delhi

Introduction:

Development in India is shaped by an advancing industrialisation. The risks associated with industrial development include increasing pollution levels, overuse of natural resources, and increasing amounts of waste and wastewater, that could lead to endangerment of ecosystems.                             

The objective of the “Sustainable and Environment-friendly Industrial Production (SEIP)” project of the Indo-German Development Cooperation is that private and public sector actors jointly implement strategies to achieve an efficient, environment- and climate-friendly industrial development. The implementation of the SEIP project works along three fields of action, which are:

  • Environmentally oriented modernisation of industrial areas.
  • Creation of enabling framework conditions.
  • Knowledge management and dissemination.

The Targeted Area: Lawrence Road Industrial Area

The Lawrence Road Industrial Area is situated in North West District of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It is one of the three industrial areas in Delhi selected to showcase concrete solutions of how industrial pollution can be reduced. The estate is spread around an area of 125 hectares encompassing approximately 1000 sheds of various sizes and different categories of industries. The industrial area comprises 450 medium, small, and micro-scale industries out of which 436 units are registered with CETP. 

Case Study: Barbeque Nation - Water Savings

Barbeque Nation Hospitality Ltd., with a strength of approx 150 pax is located in Lawrence Road Industrial Area in Delhi and involved in preparation of food and beverage items for their eatery outlets. The management took initiative to make the company’s operations more sustainable by increasing its energy and resource efficiency. With the support of an Indo-German expert team, an assessment of their current resource and energy usage has been undertaken in order to identify existing efficiency gaps.

Whilst the detailing of measures is currently still ongoing, some success has already been realised through the implementation of simple and low-cost measures.

After an Indo-German expert team conducted a comprehensive RECP audit at Barbeque Nation, a high level of water consumption and spillages from using multiple unregulated running taps for washing the raw vegetables and meat products were identified. In order to avoid such spillages and wasteful consumption of water, the expert team suggested installing efficient water faucets with flow regulator in the washing area. The intervention of using aerated nozzles at the taps with paddled flow regulator led to a reduction of water consumption by around 990,000 Litres per year translating into annual savings of 643,500 INR. Apart from those obvious economic and financial benefits, the intervention also resulted in less water spillage on the shop floor and therefore improved the working environment. This also helped in reducing the amount of wastewater the ETP had to process. These savings are especially remarkable, as they were achieved through simple very low-cost measures. An investment of only 2,000 INR had to be undertaken and the payback period was almost immediate.

Lesson Learned:

Despite the openness of Barbeque Nation towards environmental improvements in their operations, there was a scope of amelioration regarding saving potentials within the company. Water wastage occurred largely because of a lack of knowledge and awareness, and not because of the absence of highly complex technology.

Only by information given by the Indo-German expert team about low/no cost saving measures Barbeque Nation could achieve notable water and consequently cost savings.  Because of the benefits achieved by using efficient faucets for washing the company was encouraged to implement other low/no cost measures, such as insulating heaters and optimizing the use of air-conditioners.

The fact that cleaner production is not merely a good deed for the environment but also helps to increase operational efficiency leading to cost-savings and increased competitiveness, is being vividly demonstrated by the implementation of these simple yet effective changes, further contributing to a change in perception regarding environment-friendly production, paving the way for more large-scale interventions in future.

SEIP
