Summer school at CEPT University

07 - 11 May 2018, CEPT University, Ahmedabad

Sustainable and Environment-friendly Industrial Production” (SEIP) project conducted a Summer School course at CEPT University, Ahmedabad between 7 -11 May 2018. The topic of the Summer School was Preparing sustainable site master plan for Industrial areas in Gujarat. 16 students from both undergraduate and post-graduate degrees and from planning, technology, and architecture disciplines participated in the 5-day intensive course.

SEIP has been piloting innovative and financially sustainable solutions for environmental problems and promoting resource efficiency in the industrial areas of India and has been supporting capacity development of relevant stakeholders. Experiences gathered through these activities have led to the formulation of guidelines for preparing site master plans for industrial areas that could be used by planning practitioners and implementing authorities to create a sustainable development environment for industries. Through this Summer School, this guideline was put into practice by the students in order to develop a retrofit site master plan for Vapi Industrial Estate. The students first understood the relevance of using sustainability parameters while preparing the site plans for industrial areas, then they were briefed about the current status of Vapi Industrial estate, and then they worked on developing retrofit solutions. The students were divided into three working groups, and they came up with three different proposals covering infrastructure, social, and economic aspects of Vapi. The final presentations were done in front of GIDC officials who appreciated the efforts of the students and said that they like to take up some of the proposals for further deliberation with GIZ.
