Modernisation/upgradation of existing CETPs - Common Effluent Treatment Plants existing

The existing CETPs at the GIDC Industrial Estate Vapi, Lawrence Road Industrial Area and IIE Haridwar need improvements to reduce pollution and the corresponding reduction in pollution levels to the rivers that receive these wastewaters (viz. River Ganga, River Yamuna and River Damanganga). The SEIP project will work on improvements in these CETPs related to technologies involved in wastewater treatment, as well as operation & management aspects, so as to reduce pollution levels.

In Patparganj Industrial Area in Delhi, about 1.5 mld of treated/untreated wastewater goes into nearby nallah, which finally joins River Yamuna, thereby adding to its pollution. Also, the industries in this industrial area do not have sufficient water supplies. The SEIP project will work on solutions for recycle/reuse of this wastewater for industrial purposes, thereby stopping discharges of wastewater into the drains that cause pollution.

Conveyance systems – industrial wastewater conveyance systems and storm water drainage

Conveyance systems for industrial wastewater play an important role in collecting wastewater from industries and carrying them to the CETP or to its place of disposal. Due to lack of conveyance systems or non-functional systems, industrial wastewater is likely to cause pollution problems due to reasons of overflow, leakages etc.

Similarly, stormwater flowing from the industrial areas has potential to cause pollution if not properly managed due to contamination from waste dumps, mixing with industrial wastewater etc.

The SEIP project will work on solutions for industrial wastewater conveyance systems and stormwater drainage, as per requirements, thereby targeting reduced pollution levels.

Waste management - CETP/ETP sludges, recyclable wastes

The solid wastes generated from the CETPs and ETPs pose problems due to lack of proper disposal facilities in Delhi. The solid waste from CETP in Vapi has a very high moisture content that poses disposal problems. Also, there are wastes such as compostable wastes and other recyclable wastes such as paper wastes that can be recycled into usable products.

The SEIP project will work on solutions for improved management of CETP/ETP waste and on recyclable wastes, thereby targeting reduced pollution levels.

Online monitoring system - individual industries, CETP, River

The environmental regulatory agencies (CPCB/SPCBs) have been constantly tightening the monitoring systems so that not only the conditions of wastewater discharges from industries and industrial areas can be checked, but also the defaulters can be identified and actions taken. Recently, CPCB has suggested online monitoring systems to be installed by certain types of industries and CETPs. However, there are a number of problems associated with choosing the right equipment, after sales services, calibration of equipment etc. CPCB and SPCBs are also working on monitoring of receiving water bodies, such as River Ganga, River Yamuna and River Damanganga that receive industrial wastewater.

The SEIP project will work on solutions for improved monitoring systems, which would help in better monitoring of the pollution levels and improvements from time to time.

Skills development for operators (technicians, helpers) of industrial wastewater treatment plants

The industrial wastewater treatment plants has several jobs associated, viz. support staff, supervisory staff, managerial staff etc. depending on the size of the treatment plants. In association with the Skill Council for Green Jobs of the National Skill Development Corporation, the SEIP project is working on skills development for technicians and helpers of the ETPs/CETPs in Vapi, Haridwar and Delhi. The improved skills are expected to improve the operation of the treatment plants, thereby reducing pollution levels.

Environmental improvement in selected industries

The individual industries located in the selected industrial areas are required to meet with the prescribed limits/standards for wastewater before they discharge their wastewaters. The improvements relate to technologies involved in wastewater treatment, as well as operation & management aspects.

Also, within the individual industry premises, there is an ample opportunity for improving production processes, reducing wastewater/wastes, pollution levels and improving overall the environmental management.

The SEIP project will work on improvements in selected industries from the industrial areas of Vapi, Haridwar and Delhi, including improvements in their Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) and well as in improving production processes and reducing pollution generated.

Awareness programmes, clean-up drives

The SEIP Project has various activities for strengthening awareness amongst the stakeholders and getting them involved in the change processes and improved environmental situations. Environmental drives are one way of such awareness drives.

Environmental Technology Platform

An Environmental Technology Platform is planned to be set up based on a viable business model, for facilitating information on technologies related industrial waste and wastewater, and to facilitate technology transfer.

Green rating and certification system for industrial areas

A green rating system is proposed to be developed for industrial areas so that these serve as benchmarks for planning new industrial area or retrofitting old industrial areas, besides being able to assess how good or bad is an industrial area from environment and sustainability perspective. A certification system is proposed to be introduced that will help in assessing the level of “greening” achieved.

New measures under policies/plans/programmes

Based on various activities taken up under SEIP, proposals on new measures under policies/plans,/programmes will be developed for supporting in reducing pollution and increasing resource efficiency. Examples of such measure may include:
